You should consider student loan debt when choosing your college major. If your parents are paying for your schooling, or you got a full-ride, it's less risky to major in your passion, because at least you won't be paying for your degree for 10+ years after graduating. Without student loan debt, you'll have more freedom to take a lower-paying job and still be able to live a relatively normal life in your early 20s. If you know that you're going to have to take out student loans, it might be best to prioritize majoring in something that will have more immediate career outcomes. Majoring in Nursing or Engineering is a lot more difficult than majoring in English, but if you're graduating in four years from the same institution, those degrees cost the same. Also, you can start making bigger money quickly, which makes it much easier to stomp out those student loans.

Some parents tell their kids that they won't pay for their college unless they major in something practical and high-paying. The mom in this story had no real control over what her daughter majored in because she wasn't the one paying for her daughter's schooling.
